You have to put it back in place to get the thing to work. Unacceptable for a high-end product. It will last a lifetime, though. No batteries to charge/replace, and you can easily clean it with the supplied brush and/or a dunk in the sink. As another reviewer has stated, the trimmer does have a tendency to fall apart during use, but it's easy to reassemble. I have found that simply paying attention to the screws and giving them a prophylactic tightening every once in a while avoids this problem. All in all, I am happy with the trimmer, though I do wish they'd figure out a way to use lock washers or something to keep the screws tightly in place.
